Summary of Function:

The Cultural Support worker is to provide professional and practical support to help create an environment where young people are equipped with the lifestyle habits necessary to assist in becoming independent, strong healthy minded informed young people proud of their unique Nnu identity.

 

Job Duties:

  • Assists in promoting cultural growth and behavioral change that will support academic success and school retention;
  • Assist teachers and other staff to understand and effectively service Listuguj students by promoting a high regard for First Nation culture and language among the student body;
  • Assists classroom teachers in the implementation of cultural curriculum;
  • Provide cultural sensitivity workshops to teachers and staff;
  • Provide individual mentoring to students when needed;
  • Perform daily smudging in the school and classrooms, and when needed;
  • Promote, plan and organize cultural ceremonies for our students, staff and parents;
  • Assist schools in academic, cultural, social and emotional support regarding First Nations culture, history and language;
  • Assist in the development and implementation of programs and activities directly related to the First Nations culture, history, language;

Requirements

  • Speak fluent Mi’gmaq
  • Experience working with children in an Educator capacity
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of First Nations student’s needs, concerns and issues.
  • Knowledge of Mi’gmaq culture and communities.
  • Must submit a criminal/vulnerable sector check
