Community Update: Important Notice Regarding Clam Bed Access
Please be advised that there has been an update regarding the status of local clam beds. While there was a memo from DFO that was shared to Chief & Council that the beds were opening, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) has since clarified that the local area clam beds must remain closed for the time being.
We understand this is disappointing news, as many in the community were eager to begin digging. However, this decision is based on an abundance of caution for public health and safety.
Key Information:
- Safety First: Tests have historically shown levels of E. coli bacteria in these clams. Consuming them at this time poses a health risk, particularly for our elders and vulnerable community members.
- Prohibited Areas: Please refer to the map below. Areas marked in RED are strictly closed to digging. DFO will be installing signs in these areas to notify the public.
- Permitted Areas: Areas marked in GREEN (such as behind the island) remain open for digging under standard regulations.
- Regulations: The standard limit of 100 clams per day for personal consumption still applies in open areas. Selling clams remains prohibited.
Next Steps:
The process to safely reopen these beds is ongoing. DFO is currently working to determine when a safe reopening can occur. We will continue to advocate for our community and provide updates as soon as official information is received.
We ask everyone to be courteous and follow these guidelines to avoid potential fines and, most importantly, to keep our community healthy.
