Communication Strategy Between Eel River Bar First Nation & MTI Indigenous Knowledge Department on Proposed Ecorock Project
Today we write our community to establish a respectful, transparent, and coordinated communication framework between Eel River Bar First Nation Chief & Council, the Mi’gmawe’l Tplu’taqnn Incorporated (MTI) Indigenous Knowledge (IK) Department, and Ecorock Mine proponents throughout the Mi’gmaq Rights Impact Assessment process.
The strategy ensures that Mi’gmaq rights, Indigenous Knowledge, environmental stewardship, cultural values, and community concerns are effectively represented, documented, and communicate.
The public engagement will take place with MTI Indigenous Knowledge department on July 21st from 4:00PM to 6:00PM taking place in the Elders Room and Indian Tacos will be on the menu. We encourage all voices to come out and be respectful.
Questions from MTI will be asking about how the proposed mine will impact our rights, our day to day life, do we harvest any resources from that area, what is the traditional significance of the sight, any old stories of the proposed mine, impact on our fishing grounds and any additional information for Mi’gmaq Rights Impact Assessment.
Your Chief & Council remain committed to a grassroots, community lead approach when it comes to dealing with this proponent. Chief and Council want to walk with you along this process and members of C&C will be present at the session to hear our communities’ input, so we know the next steps from our people. Adherence to the principles of Free, Prior and Informed Consent are key guiding principles.
In closing, when we get the official direction from community, we will have a statement and BCR affirming our community’s stance.
In Peace and Friendship,
Eel River Bar First Nation Chief and Council
