Councillor & Portfolio Update – D. LaBillois Bjorndal

Kwe’ Ugpiganjig, I am your newly elected councillor D. LaBillois Bjorndal. I am very thankful that I will be holding the Child & Family and Education portfolios for the 2025-2027 term.

We are excited to announce that we are working on a feasibility study for a standalone Community Childcare Center. This marks a significant milestone for us, and we couldn’t have reached this point without the collaboration between the Education Director, Economic Development Department, and the CDWAI team. The project team has been working closely with DABLE Advisory & Consulting Services since early June and are in the early stages of collecting data for the feasibility study.

As we approach the launch for Community engagement sessions, we want to highlight that a standalone Childcare Center had been an identified priority project from our Community Comprehensive Plan. We are looking forward to engaging and hearing from community members about the upcoming project.

Splash Pad Phase 1 and 2 have been completed, Phase 3 is currently being worked on. The highly anticipated opening date still isn’t set. I’d like to thank Economic Development Director, Housing Director, Boissenault & McGraw, past Chiefs & Council’s for their advocacy to ensure this project comes to life, although it was identified through the Community Comprehensive Plan, there were many hurdles to jump through even with funding and partnership secured. We also want to thank Pictou Trucking and Tom Simonson Contracting for their hard work to ensure the project delivery.

Thank you once again to our teams for your commitment to these projects. We are excited to embark on this journey together and look forward to achieving growth and success for our community.
