Statement from Chief & Council of Eel River Bar First Nation Regarding Incident at Levesques Bridge

Eel River Bar Chief & Council wish to express our deep concern regarding the recent incident involving a vehicle being driven through the river at Levesque’s Bridge. We want to quickly note that the individuals involved are not members of Eel River Bar First Nation.

As Mi’gmaq people, we have always held a sacred responsibility to respect, protect, and care for the land and waters that have sustained our communities since time immemorial. Our rivers are not only bodies of water; they are living parts of our traditional territory and hold cultural, environmental, and spiritual significance for our people.

The actions witnessed at Levesque’s Bridge do not reflect Mi’gmaq values, teachings, or traditions. Such behavior demonstrates a lack of respect for the natural environment and the responsibility we all share to be stewards of the land for future generations. With the decline of the salmon population action as such will only help the decline.

Chief and Council stand firmly against any activity that may damage or disrespect our waterways, wildlife habitats, and natural resources. We encourage everyone, not just Mi’gmaq to act alike to exercise good judgment and to act in a manner that honors the teachings of our ancestors and the values of respect, responsibility, and environmental stewardship.

We remain committed to protecting our lands and waters. We ask everyone to join us in ensuring that our natural environment is treated with the care and respect it deserves.

Together, let us lead by example and uphold the true spirit of being Mi’gmaq

In Peace and Friendship,
Eel River Bar First Nation Chief and Council
